How to A/B test your YouTube thumbnails.

YouTube's built-in test picks a winner for you. Here's how it works, how to set one up, and what changes now that dynamic thumbnails are coming.

01 / The basics

How YouTube's thumbnail A/B test works

YouTube Studio has a built-in A/B test, also called Test & Compare. You can compare up to three versions: thumbnail only, title only, or title and thumbnail together. Title testing rolled out globally in December 2025.

YouTube measures watch time to choose a winner, rather than simply counting clicks. When there is a winner, that version is shown to all viewers. A test can run for up to two weeks and ends as Winner, Performed Same, or Inconclusive.

02 / Eligibility

Before you start: Test & Compare eligibility

Use YouTube Studio on a desktop computer. Your channel needs advanced features enabled. The test is not available for Shorts, scheduled livestreams, or Premieres. Live archives can be tested.

Choose a finished video you can leave alone during the test. If you change its title or thumbnail while the test is running, YouTube stops the test.

03 / In Studio

How to A/B test thumbnails in YouTube Studio

  1. On desktop, open YouTube Studio and select the video. For an existing video, go through Content.
  2. In the Title box or under Thumbnail, select A/B Testing.
  3. Choose Thumbnail only, Title only, or Title and thumbnail.
  4. Add up to three versions and select Done.
  5. Let the test run. Do not change the title or thumbnail while it is in progress.

04 / What the report says

How to read Winner, Performed Same, and Inconclusive

Winner

One version clearly came out ahead on watch time. Note what idea made it different before your next test.

Performed Same

The versions performed about the same. Choose the one you prefer and try a more distinct idea next time.

Inconclusive

The test did not find a strong difference. This is useful feedback, not a failed video. Try a clearer contrast or a video with more traffic.

05 / A/B testing vs. dynamic thumbnails

One winner, or the right one for each viewer.

YouTube announced dynamic thumbnails at Made on YouTube on September 23, 2026. The announced approach is different from a standard A/B test.

A/B testing now

Find one winner

Test up to three options. If one wins by watch time, YouTube shows that version to all viewers.

Dynamic thumbnails, announced

Match the viewer

Upload up to three thumbnails for one video. YouTube would show each audience segment the one most likely to spark its interest.

Either way, bring three strong, distinct ideas worth showing. YouTube also announced that, if a creator allows it, Studio will be able to monitor thumbnail performance and run tests on older videos on its own.

06 / The measure

Why YouTube chooses by watch time

A thumbnail can earn a click and still disappoint the viewer. YouTube's test looks at watch time, so the useful question is whether the packaging brings people into a video they actually want to watch.

Make the thumbnail promise what the video delivers. A stronger test does not require a louder promise.

07 / Better experiments

Making thumbnail tests worth running

  • Make versions that answer different reasons to click. A new idea teaches you more than a slightly different color.
  • Change one idea at a time so the result is easier to interpret.
  • Leave the title and thumbnail alone while a test is running.
  • Keep a simple log: the video, the versions, the result, and what you might try next.

For a long video, the transcript and chapters can help you find a thumbnail promise the video actually delivers. customTranscripts.com is preparing searchable transcripts and chapter notes.

A sample test brief

Three different ideas for one video

Imagine a video about restoring a thrifted lamp. Keep the video and title the same, then try three thumbnail ideas that make different promises.

A / THE PERSONThe creator's reaction

Make the emotion the reason to pause.

B / THE RESULTThe restored lamp

Show what changed by the end.

C / THE PAYOFFA short repair promise

Put the useful outcome in a few words.

This is a fictional example, not a test result. Log which idea you used, what YouTube reported, and what you will try next.

08 / Avoid these

Common A/B testing mistakes

  • Versions too similar: tiny changes may not teach you which idea connects.
  • Editing mid-test: changing a title or thumbnail stops the test.
  • Calling Inconclusive a failure: it means there was no clear difference in this test.
  • Testing with very little traffic: a video with too few impressions may not produce a clear winner.

09 / Make the options

Three great thumbnails, every video.

10 / Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is YouTube's A/B test free?

Yes. It is a built-in YouTube Studio feature for eligible channels with advanced features enabled.

Can I test Shorts?

No. YouTube's A/B testing is not available for Shorts. It is also unavailable for scheduled livestreams and Premieres. Live archives can be tested.

Why did my test come back Inconclusive?

The test did not find a strong enough difference between the versions. Try a more distinct idea next time, or test a video with more traffic. You can choose the version you prefer.

What are dynamic thumbnails?

YouTube announced a feature that can show different thumbnails to different audience segments. It is an announced feature, not a full rollout. Read the dynamic thumbnails guide for the announced details.

Should I still A/B test once dynamic thumbnails arrive?

Yes, when you need to learn which title or thumbnail performs best as one version for all viewers. Dynamic thumbnails are a different announced approach, and both start with strong, distinct options.
